Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) was a prolific composer and gifted organist and pianist whose career spanned more than seven decades. He dedicated his 1887 piece Caprice on Danish and Russian Airs, Op. 79, to Maria Feodorovna, a Danish princess who became the Empress of Russia. Saint-Saëns composed the piece for three leading French wind players of the time: flutist Paul Taffanel, oboist Georges Gillet, and clarinetist Charles Turban.
