TheRandomRedRailfan and friends are pleased to announce, the first drop of the KL&MCo, the Southern 107!
Southern Railway No.107 is a 2-8-0 "consolidation" Built by Baldwin in November 1887 for the East Tennessee Virginia & Georgia Railroad (ETV&G) as No.419. On the ETV&G, the 107 would've likely hauled freights on the main, seeing as, at the time it was considered "large".
Her Life on the ETV&G would last only seven years before the ETV&G, and the Richmond & Danville (R&D) were merged to create the Southern. the locomotive was renumbered from 419 to 107. 107's life on the Southern is widely unknown. It is presumed that it would have continued freight until larger power arrived. There is a possibility that 107 could've been the Knoxville shop goat, much like how 154 would eventually become the yard goat. She would last on the SOU until 1942 when she was bought by the Smokey Mtn. Railroad (SMR.)
on the Smokey, she regained the title of "large" as she was the lines most powerful locomotive. She hauled construction supplies to and from Douglas Dam's construction sight, after that seized, it hauled (fairly short) freights until 1954 when the line dieselized with a single diesel, No.440 (of which they did not own.)
In 1961, 107 was bought along with 206 to be on display outside of Rebel Railroad. 107 would stand through the numerous owners and names of Rebel Railroad up into Dollywood when in 2025, it was donated to the Knoxville & Holston River Railroad to potentially run their three rivers rambler train. Currently 107 is being restored to operation.
