Top Exercise Ideas for Foot Drop.
• Foot drop is typically the result of a nerve, brain or spinal cord injury resulting in paralysis of the anterior tibialis muscle which is responsible for dorsiflexing (lifting) the foot.
• This can also occur due to a peripheral nerve injury to the peroneal nerve, or various neurological disorders such as stroke amd multiple sclerosis.
• The exercises listed above are effective in addressing both muscular endurance and strengthening of the anterior tibialis muscle.
This includes higher level and lower leven exercises depending on the level of activation.
• Other exercises not listed above include:
1) Perturbation training
2) Balancing on uneven surfaces like foam or roker board ; improves ankle activation.
3) Use of electrical stimulation can be beneficial if utilized with functional activities.
▶️ If you have complete paralysis or no ability to lift your foot, you likely need to be evaluated by a physical therapist to discuss options for bracing and /or other therapeutic techniques to help with functional recovery.
