Enjoy this talk with Marcus Munafo: Biased scientists, extraterrestrial life, and the power grassroots movements.
Abstract: "Many of the working practices and culture of academia are ancient – universities have existed for well over a thousand years, the concept of the academic journal is 400 years old, and the notion of the 19th Century independent scholar still encapsulates the implicit model of what it is to be an academic. The result is considerable inertia, and (unconscious) conservatism when it comes to changing how we work in academia. To move academia, and academic practice, into the 21st Century will require coordinated action across multiple elements of the sector. I will discuss current efforts to achieve this."
Marcus is a professor of biological psychology at University of Bristol. His metascience research investigates the role of incentive structures in science, and the extent to which these shape the robustness and reproducibility of scientific research.
