Few people have heard of the HMT Lancastria - yet it remains the biggest loss of life in Britain’s maritime tragedy. The ship was bombed and sunk by German aircraft off the coast of France in June 1940, claiming the lives of between 4000 and 7000 people.
Today, more than 80 years later, a small London church continues to keep the memory of those lost alive. St Katharine Cree, near Leadenhall Street, holds an annual memorial service in June, led by Lloyd’s Choir, who have been part of the remembrance for decades.
