WIDE FIGHTING RAGES IN CYPRUS, TURKS CONTROL ROAD TO NICOSIA; THE NYT, 21-7-1974
Heavy fighting raged on Cyprus yesterday as Turkey invaded the strategic Mediterranean island with powerful land, sea and air forces, vowing to topple the Greek‐oriented regime that deposed President Makarios last Monday.
After a day of fierce ground fighting and aerial and naval bombardment, Turkish forces had established a wide beachhead on the northern coast and had secured a corridor inland to the capital of Nicosia.
Early this morning, very, heavy fighting was reported in and around the Ledra Palace Hotel in Nicosia, where hun‐: dreds of “foreign reporters are stationed. An Israeli military correspondent in the hotel said water and electricity were gone and added that they had not eaten for 24 hours. [Details on Page 25.]
The invasion yesterday caught the international diplomatic community by surprise and undermined a week of futile efforts to ease the situation.

FIGHTING ERUPTS ON CYPRUS AGAIN, THE NYT, 18-8-1974
NICOSIA, Cyprus, Aug. 17—The cease‐fire declared on Cyprus last night broke down today with a new thrust southward by Turkish forces.
After seizing the northern third of the island, Turkey's powerful invasion army appeared to be seeking to reach Turkish Cypriote communities elsewhere.
An armored column reached Pyroi, a Turkish Cypriote community 10 miles: southeast of Nicosia on the road to the coastal city of Larnaca. This effectively cut one of the island's north‐south highways and brought Turkish positions well south of the line that was assumed yesterday to be the southern limit of what would be Turkish‐controlled Cyprus:
[In Athens, American and Greek officials were assuming that the United States would be asked to vacate or at least reorganize some of its military installations in Greece. Anti‐American: feeling swept Greece and demonstrations against the United States continued in Athens. Page 9.]
An Appeal for Help
Another Turkish Cypriote community, Louroujjna, also appeared to be a goal of the Turkish thrust after its inhabitants reportedly appealed to the Turks for help. The town lies four miles southwest of Pyroi and its capture would enable the Turkish forces to isolate Greek Cypriote National Guard units in Nicosia from those in the south.
