Starting an off-grid life means using my hands more than ever… but lately they’ve been giving out on me.
In this short video, I show the callouses I’ve built up, some the work that caused them, and the challenges I’m facing with my hand injuries — including De Quervain’s tenosynovitis in my left hand and numbness in my right every night.
I’m still determined to live off-grid, even if my hands aren’t making it easy.

My Story:
I am a 52 year old early retiree who resigned from my teaching job of 21 years. At the time of my resignation, I'd been working for 40 years because I started working since I was 11 years old in Jamaica. I have worked non-stop from I was 11 to 51, sometimes having 2-3 different jobs. During this early retirement phase of my life, reclaiming my health is my top priority. I am in the process of building a life off grid in Portugal.
