It's true that the vast majority of carburetor trouble comes from under the distributor cap. Whether you have an Austin-Healey 3000, a Triumph TR6, an MGB, or an XKE; it's rare to experience carburetor trouble except for gummed up fuel resulting from letting the car sit for too long.
In our big Healey, we pull the distributor to check its operation on a vintage Sun distributor tester. You can do a similar check with a timing light and a tachometer, although this is a lot more difficult if the engine is misbehaving since the RPM might be inconsistent.
