As the Royal Rumble drew near, Edge found himself in a program with none other than Rey Mysterio. A title match was scheduled for the pay-per-view, with Edge successfully retaining the gold in a thrilling contest. However, the rivalry between these two veterans was far from being over, leading to a rematch being scheduled for WWE No Way Out 2008.
