Karl Schwarzschild was a German physicist and astronomer best known for his pioneering work in general relativity. In 1915, while serving in the German army during World War I, he provided the first exact solution to Einstein's field equations for a single, spherical, non-rotating mass. His work led to the concept of the Schwarzschild radius, which defines the event horizon of a non-rotating black hole. Schwarzschild died in 1916, likely from pemphigus, and was later honored with the naming of asteroid 837 Schwarzschilda and a lunar crater.
