This video reviews the anatomy and osteology of the radius, a right bone is used.
Clinical Anatomy Course Director - Dr. Manion, PhD
Anatomy Lab Diener - Adam Jansen
1. lateral bone of the forearm - proximal extremity, shaft, distal extremity.
2. proximal extremity - head, neck, and tuberosity. head consists of two articular surfaces, the fovea (capitulum of humerus) and the articular circumference (radial notch of ulna). The head is held in the radial notch by annular ligament. posterior aspect of the neck - supinator. radial, or bicipital tuberosity - insertion of the biceps brachii tendon.
3. shaft - lateral convexity. three borders that form three surfaces. The anterior, posterior, and interosseous border and the anterior, posterior, and lateral surface
4. anterior border. anterior oblique line - radial head of the flexor digitorum superficialis and flexor polices longus. lower fourth - pronator quadratus. suprastyloid crest - brachioradialis muscle.
5. interosseous border- interosseous membrane.
6. posterior border begins at the posterior aspect of the neck and ends at the dorsal tubercle (Lister’s).
7. anterior surface - flexor pollicis longus, pronator quadratus, nutrient foramen
8. lateral surface - supinator, pronator tuberosity, tendon of pronator teres, abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis
9. posterior surface – supinator, abductor pollicis longus, extensor pollicis brevis, posterior oblique line
10. distal extremity five surfaces, three non articular, and two articular
11. non articular regions, anterior surface, lateral surface - styloid process. Anterior surface - suprastyloid crest. posterior surface - Lister’s tubercle - medial are grooves for extensor indicis, extensor pollicis longus, and extensor digitorum communis. Lateral are grooves for the extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis.
12. articular surfaces, medial surface - the ulnar notch. inferior surface (carpal articular surface). The lateral portion articulates with the scaphoid, and the medial portion articulates with the lunate.
