Grand Theft Auto 5 is a 2013 action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It is the seventh main entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, following 2008's Grand Theft Auto IV, and the fifteenth instalment overall. Set within the fictional state of San Andreas, based on Southern California, the single-player story follows three protagonists—retired bank robber Michael De Santa (Ned Luke), street gangster Franklin Clinton (Shawn Fonteno), and drug dealer and gunrunner Trevor Philips (Steven Ogg), and their attempts to commit heists while under pressure from a corrupt government agency and powerful criminals. Players freely roam San Andreas's open world countryside and fictional city of Los Santos, based on Los Angeles.

Plot
In 2004, criminals Michael Townley, Trevor Philips, and Brad Snider attempt a heist in Ludendorff, North Yankton, but it goes wrong, leaving Michael presumed dead. Nine years later, Michael lives in Los Santos under the alias Michael De Santa, having secretly made a deal with FIB agent Dave Norton. He meets Franklin Clinton, a small-time gangbanger, when Franklin tries to repossess his son’s car. They later bond, and Michael drags Franklin into a life of crime after wrecking a mansion belonging to drug lord Martin Madrazo, who demands compensation. With hacker Lester Crest, they rob a jewelry store to pay the debt. Meanwhile, Trevor, now living in Blaine County, recognizes Michael’s handiwork and reunites with him.

As their criminal exploits escalate, Michael’s family leaves him, Franklin gets entangled in gang conflicts, and Trevor battles various rivals for control over Blaine County’s black market. The FIB coerces Michael and Franklin into undermining a rival agency, but Michael seizes the chance to erase evidence against himself. Trevor later discovers Michael’s past betrayal, causing a rift. The three plan one last heist at the Union Depository, but tensions between them threaten its success.

After the heist, Franklin is forced to choose between killing Michael, killing Trevor, or saving both. If he chooses to save them, they eliminate their enemies together before going their separate ways as friends.
