Make your evenings special with this crunchy and spicy Churumuri Chivda (Mandakki Chivda) — a traditional Uttara Karnataka snack made with puffed rice (mandakki), peanuts, fried gram dal (putani), and flavorful tempering of garlic, curry leaves, mustard seeds, and sesame seeds.
In this recipe, Nanda Saviruchi shows how to make Mandakki Chivda step-by-step — crispy, tasty, and perfect with a hot cup of tea!
✨ Ingredients:
Mandakki (puffed rice)
Peanuts
Fried gram dal (putani)
Red chilli powder
Garlic
Gram flour
Sugar
Ginger garlic paste
Asafoetida (hing)
Cumin seeds
Mustard seeds
Curry leaves
Salt
Oil
Method :
Heat oil in a large pan.
Add sesame seeds and mustard seeds, let them splutter.
Add peanuts and fry till light golden.
Add chopped garlic, sauté for a few seconds.
Add ginger garlic paste and fry till the raw smell disappears.
Toss in curry leaves, fry till crisp.
Add fried gram dal (putani) and roast lightly.
Add red chilli powder, hing, salt, and a pinch of sugar, then mix well.
Pour this tempering mixture over mandakki (puffed rice) in a large bowl.
Mix everything evenly so that all flavors coat the puffed rice.
Your Crispy Mandakki Chivda is ready! Store it in an airtight container and enjoy it anytime with tea or coffee ☕
