🏛️ Historical Overview

Founded in 1924 as the Edmonton Museum of Arts, the AGA held its inaugural exhibition in the Palm Room of the Hotel Macdonald, featuring 24 works loaned from the National Gallery of Canada .

Renamed the Edmonton Art Gallery in 1956, the institution occupied several locations, notably the Richard Secord House, before relocating to its own building in 1969. That structure was designed by Donald G. Bittorf and B. James Wensley, and expanded in 1977 .

In 2005, a major rebranding transformed it into the Art Gallery of Alberta. Following an international design competition, Randall Stout was selected to redesign the site. The gallery reopened on January 31, 2010, after a CA$88 million redevelopment that doubled exhibition space and added modern amenities.
