It’s NDP leadership week on the pod — hence the extra episode.

You might be thinking, ‘but Rachel, New Democrats will choose Jagmeet Singh’s successor in March! Why now?’

Well, my friends, the deadline to sign up to have a say in that race is coming up much, much sooner.

To vote in the race, you have to be an NDP member by January 28 — that’s less than two weeks from now.

So as you can imagine, the people who want to win that leadership are hustling to get their supporters signed up.

That’s why I’m also trying to make sure you, my wonderful, perfect and incredibly charming bubble pop listeners, get to meet all these candidates. That way, you can decide if you want to have a say in who wins — before it’s too late.

You’ve heard from Tony McQuail, Tanille Johnston and Avi Lewis.

Well today, I’ve got another leadership hopeful lined up for you: Rob Ashton.

This guy is the worker’s worker. He has spent over 30 years as a dockworker and union leader.

He’s currently the National President of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union for Canada.

He’s also very clear that he’s not a politician. To that I say: well, not yet!

What he is, however, is laser-focused on issues like affordability, inequality, and the wealth gap.

While he gives off the vibe of a gruff version of Santa Claus, you can forget the coal — this guy isn’t afraid to punch a hole right through the stockings of the billionaire class.

Speaking of not pulling punches, Rob has made headlines for actually criticizing one of his NDP leadership competitors — something you don’t see much in these New Democrat races. Then there’s his little AI-related oopsie that got him in some hot water with potential supporters.

Hey, it’s keeping things interesting.
