🦀 Kerala-Style Crab Curry with Coconut Milk
A flavorful and aromatic crab curry, slowly simmered in spices and creamy coconut milk. It’s a little messy to eat — but the taste is absolutely worth it.
🧂 Ingredients
2 tbsp coconut oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tbsp crushed ginger
1 tbsp crushed garlic
10–12 shallots (sliced or halved)
1 large onion, sliced
3–4 green chilies, slit
1 sprig curry leaves (+ extra for garnish)
½ tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chili powder
1½ tsp coriander powder
½ tsp garam masala
½ tsp black pepper powder
500–750g fresh crab, cleaned and cut
Salt to taste
1 cup second (thin) coconut milk
½ cup first (thick) coconut milk
🍳 Method
Temper the Spices:
In a large vessel or pan, heat coconut oil. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
Sauté Aromatics:
Add the crushed ginger and garlic
Add the shallots and sauté until they start to soften.
Build the Base:
Add sliced onions, green chilies, and curry leaves. Sauté until the onions turn golden.
Add the Spices:
Sprinkle in turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and pepper powder. Mix well and sauté for 1–2 minutes on low heat until the raw smell goes away.
Cook the Crab:
Add the cleaned crab pieces and salt. Mix thoroughly to coat the crab in the masala.
Simmer:
Pour in the second (thin) coconut milk. Mix well, cover with a lid, and cook on medium heat for 10–15 minutes — or until the crab turns a bright orange and is fully cooked.
Finish with Coconut Milk:
Once the crab is cooked, lower the heat. Add the first (thick) coconut milk and a few fresh curry leaves.
Important: Do not let it boil — just heat gently and turn off the flame.
🍽️ Serving Suggestion
Serve hot with steamed rice or appam. Don’t forget a bowl of water and napkins — crab curry is meant to be eaten with your hands, mess and all!
