For this performance the Compline Choir invited the Saint Mark’s Cathedral Boys & Girls Choir, Rebekah Gilmore, director, to join them. The Compline Choir and Boys & Girls Choir collaborate every two to three years to chant the office of Compline together.
In a darkened Episcopal cathedral in Seattle, Washington, on Sunday evenings at 9:30 pm., a group of men chant the Office of Compline, the last monastic office of the day. Begun in 1956 by the group’s founder, Peter R. Hallock, it has become something of a phenomenon, with upwards of 500 people (many in their teens and early twenties) attending the service, and thousands in the radio audience and on the Internet each week. Jason Anderson now conducts the choir. Over the years, members of the group who have left Seattle have started observing the office in their new communities.
