This week’s video is packed with farm and home improvements as we take a big step toward making our new house more energy-efficient while also keeping our farm and sheep in top shape.
First up, we get a home energy assessment to see what upgrades will be needed for insulation, heating, and overall efficiency. This is a crucial step before making any big changes, and we get expert advice on what’s working, what’s not, and where improvements can be made to create a more comfortable and cost-effective home.
Then, we head out to the farm for soil testing and dung sampling—two essential tasks for understanding land fertility and flock health. Good soil is the foundation of productive farming, and these tests help determine nutrient levels and what the land may need to thrive. On the sheep side, dung sampling is a great way to monitor parasites and overall flock condition, helping to ensure our animals stay in peak health without unnecessary treatments.
We also check in on our wet gap experiment, where we filled a persistently boggy section of land with wool and sea shells to see if it could improve drainage and ground conditions. It’s an unusual method, but one based on solid principles—so we reveal whether it’s actually making a difference or if more work is needed.
Finally, we take a trip down to Maam Cross Mart for an in-lamb ewe sale, where my family is involved in judging the prize winners. These sales are a great place to see high-quality breeding stock and get a feel for the market, with plenty of top sheep on offer. It’s always interesting to see which ewes take home the prizes and how prices hold up in the ring.
