Nestled on the western edge of Hong Kong, Tai O is a living relic of a vanishing world. Home to the Tanka people, this historic village was built on stilts above the tidal flats, its homes connected like the lives of the tight-knit community within. Once a bustling fishing hub, Tai O now survives mostly through tourism—but a few holdouts still cast their nets.
Pai Sook, 65, is one of the last true fishermen of Tai O. He learned the trade from his father as a boy, and never left the water. “I’ve always been a fisherman,” he says, proudly.
In a rapidly modernizing Hong Kong, Tai O stands as the last authentic fishing village—a peaceful, resilient reminder that another way of life still exists, just beyond the city’s shadows.
