(Ranch progress episode 1)
We took delivery of 13 chicks May 2nd 2020. Without a coop or brooder, we went full tilt and built both after hours. We repurposed trusses that weren't needed due to a design change at mom and dad's house build. We designed the coop around the trusses once cut in half. We used old steel roofing that would have been taken to the recycler's. Some of the other materials were saved from another fate such as the main door, and 6"x6" posts. We dove in head first on this project and are learning as we go. Our goal with this project is to provide our families with all of the eggs we need. The chickens will also help us by eating wasted veggies and other plant based food waste, while producing good chicken manure for our gardens.

Welcome to Ranch road! In 2013 our family purchased a gravel pit that was depleted of usable aggregate. Over 20 acres of the property had been commercially extracted over a period of about 30 years. Untold truckloads of sand and gravel had been excavated and hauled out, leaving little natural plants and vegetation in the 'pit' areas. Trees have seeded, and moss and grass have spread. Some species of animals have come back to call it home once again. Since we took over, white pine trees that were barely just a cone are now over 6' in height! Our homesteading journey will be slow going and likely with many mistakes made, but someday, just maybe, our combined ranch properties will provide our families and maybe even neighbours with fresh natural whole foods in a more sustainable way. It will be a lot of work, but a lot of fun too! We hope you enjoy watching as we build, fix, maintain, sow, grow, convert, drive, play, rip toys and probably at times act a bit goofy!
