In today's video, we will be painting a modern piece in procreate with lots of layered metallics and visible brushwork.
I was inspired by a beautiful piece called “Rust and Bone” from Priscilla Cardwell of Cardwell and Ink, and she has kindly given me permission to do this tutorial. Priscilla is a very talented illustrator and Skillshare teacher - so if you have a Skillshare membership, I definitely recommend that you check out her classes.

I first use my Impressionist brushes in a light grayish beige color. Sometimes during this project, I will be changing the colors in the color wheel - for instance, here where I wanted it to be just a bit whiter for contrast.
Next, I want a deep burnt orange color - so I start with the orange from the color palette and experiment just a bit until I am happy with the color, then I block out some orange across the middle of the canvas with my Choppy Strokes brush. After that, I use the Master Impressionist brush to add black as well.
Now, I have selected the Smudge tool instead of the Brush tool and under the Smudge tool I selected my Dry Palette Knife brush, which I will use along with some of the other palette knife brushes to smear and smudge these two colors together.
Back to my brush tool - I've selected the Super Dry brush in an off-white color to smudge everything up just a bit more. I always find that adding white with this brush can really rough up the texture nicely and add a nice dimension to your piece.
Next, I introduce a few similar colors at random for more of an impressionist look. I've gone back to the orange from the color palette and chosen the Impressionist Multi-Stroke 2 brush. I’m adding some accents here and there with this brush and then going back to the smudge tool with the Dry Palette Knife selected to blend all these colors around again. Now back to the Super Dry brush in white to rough it all up a bit more.
It's time to add the metallics. I’m going up to the layers panel to add a new layer on top of the rest. Selecting a gold color and the Metallic Strokes brush, I’m going to add quite a lot of gold to the bottom left and top right corners, leaving just a bit of the white showing through. Then I’ll go ahead and use the same brush sparingly in the middle of the piece with a deeper copper color.
On to the palette knives with the smudge tool to blend the metallics into the background. I realized after making this video that actually, the best brush for this purpose is probably the Soft Palette Knife brush, however I will use several of the palette knife brushes as you will see in the video. Because there is an underlying brush stroke pattern in the the Metallic Strokes brush that I had used previously, I’m now going to try and use the smudge brush to pull those strokes outward a bit further to make it look like they've been painted on with a paint brush - more of an organic look.
Next, I add a new layer and additional gold with the Metallic Strokes brush, shifting to pull the brush stroke pattern outward with the smudge tool and the Soft Palette Knife brush. Now I’m just going back to the first layer where I did the background and with the Super Dry Brush, I’m adding more dimension in both white and then black to make the metallic stand out a bit more.
Now I’m choosing the smudge tool with the Dry Oil brush selected, and I’m going to use this to push some of the background color in more of a vertical direction - similar to the piece by Cardwell & Ink.
As a final step, I've added one more layer and selected more of a dark red color to add just a few more accents with the Metallic Strokes brush, pulling outwards with the smudge tool similar to what I did earlier in this tutorial.
I hope that you are feeling inspired and ready to create now!
