The Festival of 9 Lessons and Carols

The service of Nine Lessons with Carols was first drawn up by Archbishop Benson when Bishop of Truro for use in that Cathedral in 1880, and was later simplified and modified for use in King’s College Chapel, Cambridge, in 1918 by its then Dean, the Very Reverend Eric Milner-White. This is a service of Christian worship traditionally celebrated on or near Christmas Eve. The story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in nine Bible readings or lessons interspersed with the music of Christmas carols and hymns.



아홉 말씀과 캐롤 페스티발 예배

크리스마스 아홉 말씀과 캐롤 페스티발(A Festival of 9 Lessons and Carols)은 원래 영국의 Truro 성당의 예배에서 Benson 대주교에 의해 1880년 처음 도입 되었으며, 그 후 케임브릿지 킹스 컬리지(King's College)의 Eric Milner-White목사에 의해 재정립되어 1918년 킹스 컬리지 채플에서 처음 시작된 크리스마스 음악예배로 인류의 타락, 메시아의 예언, 예수님의 탄생이라는 신비롭고도 기쁨에 넘치는 기독교의 축제를 기념하며, 아홉 곳의 성경말씀과 이에 적합한 캐롤, 합창곡, 회중 찬송으로 구성되어 있다.
이「말씀과 캐롤 페스티발」은 매년 영국 뿐 아니라 미국 등 세계 각지에서 크리스마스에 드려지는 경건하고 전통적인 캐롤 예배이다. 성탄절을 앞두고 그리스도 예수의 탄생을 기다리며 성경봉독과 찬양으로 경건하게 지내는 이 좋은 교회의 관례가 한국에서는 연세대학교회 예배에서 곽상수 교수 지휘 대학교회성가대와 곽동순 교수 오르간연주로 1990년부터 처음 도입되었고, 일반에 공개된 것은 1998년 횃불선교센타에서 개최된 이 프로그람이 처음이다.
