Henry Greene: The Ocutech VES Mini is mounted into the frame in a traditional manner, where the lens is drilled and the telescope is inserted. We have to specify the pupillary distance, the vertical positioning of the hole in the lens and the angle of inclination of the telescope.

This one has already been prepared, and as you can see it lines up directly above the patient's eye and on an upward angle so when the patient drops their head to look in they can sight right through the telescope.

A method for demonstrating the mini on the patient is to use the Essilor frame which we can put on, and then we can slide the telescope right and left in the carrier lens, position it again with the bottom of the eye piece right above the pupil.

The adjustment allows you to change the position of the pupillary distance, and also to raise and lower the bridge with the center assembly. The focusing is achieved by turning the very front knob on the telescope.

The advantage of this kind of design is it allows the patient to experience about how the telescope will work. They look with their regular vision through the carrier lens and then drop their head down and look through the telescope eyepiece.

As you can see here, it's positioned for the right eye. If you want to use it for the left eye, you can just take the telescope out of the lens, install the holder for the other side, and insert the telescope into the pre-drilled hole. Now you can demonstrate it for the other eye, if you prefer to prescribe for the left eye rather than the right eye.

After you're done demonstrating to the patient, confirm the ideal position for the telescope right and left and then we recommend that you take a millimeter rule and measure from the center of the eyepiece to the center of the bridge to determine the pupillary distance. So if we were to measure what we have here, from the center of the eye piece to the center of the bridge is 33mm.

The VES-Mini can be demonstrated in a trial ring which can be placed into a trial frame. The telescope can be positioned horizontally or it can be positioned vertically depending on your choice for the individual patient. All you need do is take your trial frame, install the trial ring into the frame and demonstrate it to your patient as you would any Bioptic Telescope system.

First we place the trial frame on the patient, adjust the temples so it's secure and position the cells on each side so that they're lined up with the center of the eye. Once that's done, we can insert the telescope into the cell and line it up for the patient so they can sight through it.

Dr. Greene: So go ahead and look across the room. Drop your head down to look into the eyepiece and you can reach up to change the focus. Once it's sharp you can move the telescope in and out by changing the adjustments on the trial frame until the patient can tell you that there's a full field right to left. Tell me when that is.

Patient: Ok

Dr. Greene: And then it's very easy to read off the top of the trial frame what the pupillary distance needs to be.
