Welcome to the Tibetan Buddhist Shrine Room at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York. Since it first opened, this installation has been our visitors’ favorite immersive art experience, an oasis for peaceful reflection.
Now the Shrine Room is accessible via virtual visits, so it can continue to be a refuge in times of stress, anxiety, and uncertainty.
This space represents an affluent Tibetan Buddhist household shrine. Traditionally practitioners would use such places to contemplate their aspirations, recall advice from religious teachers, and worship deities that embody enlightened qualities. They would also do daily rituals, meaningful offerings, ask for help removing mental and physical obstacles on their paths, and chant. Chanting is a method of reciting prayers and mantras as part of daily or special ritual practices. Together with bells and other ritual music, these sounds are offerings to deities and religious teachers.
