Behavioural Theory Application in Managing Chronic Illness: A Case Study of Hassan
Briefly introduce the purpose of the portfolio: to analyse a real-life health case using behavioural theory.
Give a detailed overview of Hassan’s situation.
Include:
Diagnosed with diabetes.
Sedentary lifestyle.
Poor diet, smokes regularly.
Stress from caregiving and financial pressure.
Limited time or motivation to focus on health.
Discuss how these factors contribute to poor self-management and complications.
“Hassan is a 45-year-old man diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Despite medical advice, he continues to lead a sedentary life, consume an unhealthy diet, and smoke regularly. His wife’s chronic illness adds to his stress, as he is the sole provider for the family. These factors result in Hassan neglecting his health needs, increasing the risk of long-term complications. His current behaviour reflects poor adherence to diabetes self-management guidelines, and interventions based on behavioural theories may help facilitate positive change.”
Introduce Hassan’s case:
Diabetic with an unhealthy lifestyle.
Sedentary, smoker, experiencing high stress.
Primary breadwinner with a wife who is also ill.
State the aim: To compare two behavioural theories (e.g., Health Belief Model and Theory of Planned Behaviour), and apply one to Hassan’s case to explore how behaviour change could be facilitated.
“This portfolio explores how behavioural theories can guide health interventions for individuals with chronic diseases. Using the case of Hassan, a middle-aged diabetic man living with multiple lifestyle-related health risks, two theories will be examined and one applied to support his behavioural change and improved health outcomes.”
a) Health Belief Model (HBM)
Developed to explain why people engage (or not) in health behaviours.
Key components:
Perceived susceptibility
Perceived severity
Perceived benefits
Perceived barriers
Cues to action
Self-efficacy
Apply briefly to Hassan:
He might underestimate his risk (low perceived susceptibility).
May not believe that change (e.g. quitting smoking) will help (low perceived benefit).
High stress = high perceived barriers.
TBP-
Focuses on intention as the predictor of behaviour.
Components:
Attitude toward behaviour
Subjective norms (influence of others)
Perceived behavioural control (confidence in ability)
Apply briefly to Hassan:
He may have negative attitudes toward exercise/diet.
Limited social support (wife is ill) might reduce subjective norms.
May feel no control over change due to stress/workload.
Then compare both theories and apply one theory to the case study by highlighting his behaviour and changes .
The you write an outcome or end result of this application
Then you write a reflection on what is the significance of this theory in long term conditions
then you write conclusion
then you write referecnes with more academic sources.
