Western White Clematis (Clematis ligusticifolia) is a vine that is native to the western United States. Leaves, branches and seeds were used as a medicine and a spice by Native Americans, these practices were also adopted by mountain men, and later by the early settlers, as peppercorns were expensive and hard to come by on the frontier.
All parts of the plant are considered toxic to humans. It can cause internal bleeding if too much is consumed, some individuals are also allergenic to the oils of the plant and may react by having a rash if the vine is touched.
