The Kalka-Shimla Railway is a narrow-gauge railway that stretches for about 96.6 kilometers through the scenic hills of Himachal Pradesh in North India, connecting Kalka to Shimla.Built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, its primary purpose was to link Shimla—then the summer capital of British India—to the rest of the country’s rail network. Early locomotives on this route were steam-powered, but diesel and diesel-hydraulic engines took over from the mid-20th century. Barog Tunnel, the longest and straightest tunnel on the line, is especially famous and is steeped in local legends.

Recognized for its historical and engineering importance, the railway was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2008 as part of the “Mountain Railways of India”.
