Bach's Prelude and Fugue in E minor (BWV 548) 'The Wedge' on the Father Willis organ of Salisbury Cathedral.
The work's nickname - 'wedge' - refers to the fugue subject, which comprises a sequence of alternating quavers whose intervals expand outwards. But this extraordinary Prelude and Fugue has so many other characteristics which make it distinctive. Both movements are of a large-scale and ambitious design, and they seem to complement one another perfectly in both musical character and proportion.
The Prelude's gigantic structure (in the style of a baroque concerto movement) provides strong, homophonic opening material, versions of which return in-between separate contrapuntal episodes which are full of satisfyingly inventive sequences.
06:58 At 231 bars in length, the Fugue is one of Bach's longest, but also one of the most daring. Once the 'wedge' Fugue subject has been stated and the exposition completed, Bach moves, without warning, into a monumental middle section hailed by the sudden arrival of rapid toccata-like semiquavers. These cascading figurations become combined with the 'wedge' subject, the semiquavers pervading the movement until the arrival of the final section, which is a note-by-note rendition of the exposition.
