Arkansas Overland Route | Trailhawk Loop Adventure from Moro Bay State Park 🚙🌲

Our Arkansas overland adventure starts at Moro Bay State Park, a historic riverfront park on the Ouachita River that once served as a busy steamboat landing and ferry crossing in the late 1800s. Today it’s a quiet gateway to some of the best overlanding in south Arkansas.

From Moro Bay, we head north to the Trailhawk Loop section of the Arkansas Overland Route, picking up a wide gravel road that cuts through open pasture land dotted with cows. Along the way, we cross several bridges over creeks, take in awesome views, and experience changing terrain as we move from section to section.

Our first recommended dispersed camp stop is Eagle Lake, a beautiful spot with a boat ramp, a separate pond, and plenty of room for multiple rigs. From there, we continue to Prairie Island, offering primitive camping, a boat ramp, and a huge parking area perfect for overlanders.

After Prairie Island, we hit pavement for about 17 miles before turning off Highway 8 and getting back on dirt. Several miles of dirt and gravel roads take us to Lake Georgia Pacific, a great spot to camp and fish. Leaving the lake, an immediate right turn puts us right back on dirt — and if it’s wet, it can get nasty fast. Weather always decides whether this route gives you a clean ride or a muddy one.

We continue on, crossing more bridges and passing a surprising number of fan palms before reaching Pine Island. The last time we were here, this road was flooded and forced us to turn around — this time it was dry all the way to the boat ramp. Dispersed camping is available here, but since we were heading home, we pushed on to Crossett Harbor.

At Crossett Harbor, we took a quick break, grabbed a few evening photos, and wrapped up the trip by crossing the bridge over the Ouachita River on our way home.
