The French Philosopher, scientist, and mathematician, René Descartes, doubted everything. But the one thing he couldn’t doubt was that he was doubting. He concluded that, in his doubt, there was clearly a capacity for thought. Because you can’t have doubt without thinking. It is here that Descartes finally reached a conclusion expressed in this famous formula: “Cogito Ergo Sum.” “I think, therefore I am.” He finally reached something that he could be absolutely sure of: his existence. Our thought life shapes the trajectory of our actions. The Apostle Paul understood this and was certain of more than just his existence. As he closed his letter to the Philippians, he had already addressed their joy (4:4), their gentleness (4:5), their prayer life (4:6–7), and the peace of God that guards their hearts and minds (4:7). Now he moves to another vital area of the Christian walk; what we think about and how we live out what we KNOW and are sure of.
