When Shin Min-a was in middle school, she went on a photoshoot with some of her friends. She sent those photos to the Kiki Magazine. The publication selected her as a model for their youth magazine, and officially started modelling for them in 1998.

She appeared in several music videos before acting debut in 2001, with a supporting role in a popular melodrama, Beautiful Days. In 2005, she performed as the lead role in the melodrama, A Love to Kill.

Shin Min-a became best known for her portrayals of supernatural horror icons revamped into endearingly innocent, yet spunky heroines in the rom-com My Girlfriend Is a Nine-Tailed Fox in 2010.

In 2015, Shin Min-a and So Ji-sub were cast in the romantic comedy series, Oh My Venus. She played an overweight lawyer where she underwent a three-hour makeup/prosthetic session for every shoot. In the same year, it was announced that she is in a relationship with model-actor Kim Woo Bin.

This year in 2021, she starred in Hometown Cha Cha Cha as a dentist who moved to the countryside, opposite co-star Kim Seon Ho.
