Einhänder released on the PlayStation in 1997, right in the middle of SquareSoft’s experimental era. Most people knew Square for Final Fantasy, but this fast, stylish 2.5D shooter showed just how far the studio could push the hardware when they stepped outside RPGs. Clean visuals, dynamic camera work, and a unique weapon-stealing system helped make Einhänder one of the most impressive action games on the PS1.
In this video, we take a full look at the game’s history, its mechanics, its presentation, and why so many players still call it one of the best hidden gems on the console. I also talk about my own memories with this game and why it means so much to me today.
