Darktable AI Toolbox Installation (Part 2) – Linux, macOS & Windows Tutorial

In this video, I show how to install the AI Toolbox I made for Darktable using Lua scripts. There are steps for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Last week, I shared how to install it with Docker, but this week focuses on a native installation.

Linux installation steps:

Note that it will not work if Darktable is installed as a Flatpak.

1. Install Ollama
Go to the Ollama website and copy the installation command to your terminal:: curl -fsSL https://ollama.com/install.sh | sh

Note: On Arch, install with pacman

2. Pull the model(s) you want (choose from the list below):
ollama pull gemma3:4b
ollama pull gemma3:12b
ollama pull gemma3:27b
ollama pull llava:7b
ollama pull minicpm-v:8b

3. Copy the link to my GitHub script repository:
https://github.com/AyedaOk/DT_custom_...

4. Open Darktable → Lua Script Manager → Install → paste the GitHub URL above.

Note: If you previously installed the first version of the script, delete it first. It’s located in $HOME/.config/darktable/lua

5. Enjoy the plugin!

macOS installation steps:

1. Install Ollama
Go to the Ollama website and download the DMG file.

2. Pull the model(s) you want (choose from the list below):
ollama pull gemma3:4b
ollama pull gemma3:12b
ollama pull gemma3:27b
ollama pull llava:7b
ollama pull minicpm-v:8b

3. Copy the link to my GitHub script repository:
https://github.com/AyedaOk/DT_custom_...

4. Open Darktable → Lua Script Manager → Install → paste the GitHub URL above.

Note: If you previously installed the first version of the script, delete it first. It’s located in $HOME/.config/darktable/lua

5. Enjoy the plugin!

Windows installation steps:

1. Install Ollama
Go to the Ollama website and download the EXE file.

2. Pull the model(s) you want (choose from the list below):
ollama pull gemma3:4b
ollama pull gemma3:12b
ollama pull gemma3:27b
ollama pull llava:7b
ollama pull minicpm-v:8b

3. Copy the link to my GitHub script repository:
https://github.com/AyedaOk/DT_custom_...

4. Open Darktable → Lua Script Manager → Install → paste the GitHub URL above.

Note: If you previously installed the first version of the script, delete it first. It’s located in ..\AppData\Local\darktable/lua

5. Make Windows open Darktable from the terminal
Open the Start menu and search for Darktable. Right-click on the icon and click on "Open file location." Next, right-click on Darktable and click on Properties. Go to the Shortcut tab and, under Target, enter the following line and click Apply: C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k "cd /d C:\Program Files\darktable\bin\ && darktable.exe"

6. Fix the icon
Go back to Properties and click on "Change Icon…" Click on Browse and go to C:\Program Files\darktable\bin\ and click on darktable.exe.

7. Enjoy the plugin!
