The MOO was developed to facilitate marine science in the furthest-south accessible marine habitat in the world.
It provides, for the first time, real-time, archival-quality ocean condition data, research-quality underwater audio, and high-resolution video necessary to understand the unique physical and biological phenomena occurring in one of the most remote parts of the world.
The MOO provides a window beneath Antarctica's frozen ocean, a giant leap towards making this special place—where few people have ever been—accessible to the world.

The McMurdo Oceanographic Observatory is a project managed by Paul A. Cziko at the University of Oregon USA, supported by the US Antarctic Program and funded by the US National Science Foundation.
