Interrupting Contagions

Exceptionally joining us is Dr. Slutkin, an epidemiologist and infectious disease specialist who began his career combating tuberculosis and cholera epidemics in Somalian refugee camps. He then worked as director of intervention for the WHO and helped to reverse the course of many epidemics, including AIDS, in 25 countries in East and Central Africa, Latin America, and Asia. Upon returning to the United States, he wondered if gun violence could be treated like an epidemic, using the principles of public health. The rest is history: the Department of Justice and the Centers for Disease Control validated the work of his organization, Cure Violence, and his methods were replicated in dozens of U.S. cities, and in many countries abroad. Dr. Slutkin is one of the “go to” people for epidemics around the globe—be it SARS, Ebola, Covid-19, or the dangers in North Korea and Ukraine.

Dr. Lee is a forensic and social psychiatrist who became known to the public through her 2017 Yale conference and book that emphasized the importance of fit leadership. In 2019, she organized a major National Press Club Conference on the theme of, “The Dangerous State of the World and the Need for Fit Leadership.” In 2024, she followed up with another major Conference, “The More Dangerous State of the World and the Need for Fit Leadership.” She published another book on fit leadership (newly expanded in May 2025), in addition to a volume on how unfitness in a leader spreads and two critical statements on fit leadership. Dr. Lee authored the internationally-acclaimed textbook, Violence; over 100 peer-reviewed articles and chapters; and 17 scholarly books and journal special issues, in addition to over 300 opinion editorials. She is also a master of divinity, currently developing a new curriculum for public education on “One World or None.”
