Gilgit-Baltistan is an internationally acknowledged disputed territory and part of the larger Kashmir dispute. Strategic investments in this disputed region are a sheer violation of both international laws and the Pakistani constitution. The recent wave of acquiring land in the name of national parks has been strongly rejected by the masses of the region on social media. With the addition of Imran Khan government’s announced two new national parks the total area acquired for national parks has become 52% of the total area of Gilgit-Baltistan. According to the global standards set by the global conservation organizations, the land for conservation should not exceed 3% of the total area of any region. This new move of national parks is seen as another tool to strengthen the colonization and dispossess people from their lands.
In this conference, Anayat Baig (member National Workers Front GB) was in conversation with Dr. Nosheen Ali on “Land, wildlife and the national question” in the context of Gilgit-Baltistan. Dr. Ali’s book on the state making and social change in Gilgit-Baltistan was published by Cambridge a year back. Her work on GB seems to have an influence of the poetic and ecological aspects of the region.
