The most weird rule of BBL explained! What is designated batter and fielder in the BBL?

The Big Bash League is set to introduce one of its most innovative playing conditions yet. From the 2026–27 season, the BBL will implement the Designated Batter and Designated Fielder rule, a change aimed at redefining workload management, squad strategy, and on-field dynamics in T20 cricket.

Under the new rule, teams will be allowed to nominate one player in the playing XI as a Designated Batter. This player will bat as usual but will not be required to bowl or field, significantly reducing physical load. In parallel, teams must also nominate a Designated Fielder, who can field, keep wickets, and bat if required, but may not bowl.

According to Big Bash League general manager Alastair Dobson, the rule is designed to offer teams greater tactical flexibility and provide fans with new strategic layers to enjoy. Ricky Ponting simplified the concept by highlighting three clear benefits: extending the careers of ageing players, accelerating the development of young fielding specialists, and protecting international stars with heavy schedules, such as Travis Head, from unnecessary injury risk.

The broader impact could be significant. Reduced workloads may lead to fewer injuries, improved player availability, higher overall fielding standards, and increased star power in the tournament. It may also open doors for elite power-hitters who struggle in the field but can change games with the bat. As the BBL continues to innovate, this rule could influence how T20 leagues worldwide view player roles and longevity.
