Hiking the Fanning Trail, Blevin's Gap Nature Preserve, Huntsville, Alabama

This is a pretty mid-winter hike of the Land Trust of North Alabama's Fanning Trail in the Blevin's Gap Nature Preserve hear Huntsville, Alabama.

The trailhead for the Fanning Trail is located at the back of a church parking lot right off of Cecil B. Ashburn Drive at the foot of Huntsville Mountain. This is the less visited northern part of the Land Trust’s Blevin’s Gap Nature Preserve.

After a short boardwalk, Jacob and I began to climb steeply up the side of the mountain on a well designed trail that switchbacks through interesting rock formations and though beautiful forest. Eventually, the trail flattens out and wraps around the mountain on its way to and through the Blevin’s Gap. Since the expansion of Cecil B. Ashburn Drive a few years ago, there is no longer a route across to the Land Trust Parking Lot at the gap. As a result, the Land Trust has re-routed the Fanning Trail to form a loop with what used to be called the Scout Trail. Jacob and I were working from outdated maps and got a little confused, but it is important to understand you can not safely cross the road any longer. Eventually, Jacob and I returned to the trailhead the way we came with a little side exploration of a small forest playground. Come along and tour this less visited north side of the Blevin’s Gap Nature Preserve!
