Gregorian chant, mode IV, Vespers hymn for Sundays of Advent
Polyphonic verses by José de Agurto y Loaysa
(c.1630-1695), sung by Krewe de Voix, Paul Weber, director, in a live performance sponsored by The Historic New Orleans Collection on December 15, 2022 at St. Louis Cathedral.
1 O gracious author of the stars,
everlasting light of believers,
O Christ, redeemer of us all,
hear now our prayers.
2 You, who despite the devil's frauds,
by an act of love,
became the medicine
of a languishing world.
3 Atoning for the common sin,
you must be led to the cross
from the sanctuary of the pure Virgin
as an unblemished victim.
4 At whose glorious power,
by the sounding of his name,
all heaven and earth
shall tremble and bend the knee.
5 So we pray,
O Great Judge of the last day,
equip us with supernal grace
and defend us from our foes.
6 Strength, honor, praise, and glory
be unto God the Father, with the Son,
and with the Holy Paraclete,
from ages unto all ages. Amen.
