More Secrets of Cantering Gaited Horses- Gaited Horse Training - TWH Minnie

In this video I canter a TWH mare, 10 years old that was never cantered. She was a show horse and so also did not canter on the trail. I have had her a couple of months, I tested to see if she could canter and then only cantered on the trail. Then just recently started her arena canter. She has a harder time cantering to the left but it is actually a better canter. To the right she can canter farther but it is not as fun as her left lead. In time both will be better, but it takes time and conditioning to get it as many of these horses were not taught to canter correctly. So as you try with your horse, have patience, for some it is very difficult, but they can get it if you keep helping them. This mare can trot and pace so you will see her fall into one of those or her gait when she loses the canter. This is normal and it is normal that they can canter on one lead better than the other. With some you can only canter 1- 2 steps others will be able to canter around the whole arena, It just depends on the horse's balance, and talent and if they are trotty or pacey. But if you just keep practicing they will get stronger and get more steps over time. Most important always quit before they get too tired, do not push them as the gaited horses can get trippy when tired.
