On April 26th this year, Archbishop Augustine Kasujja tendered his resignation as required by Canon Law, when he clocked 75 years of age. The Vatican announced that on 31st August Pope Francis had accepted the resignation of the Archbishop who has had an illustrious career as a Vatican Diplomat.
“The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the office of apostolic Nuncio in Belgium and Luxembourg presented by Archbishop Augustine Kasujja, titular of Caesarea in Numidia,” the Holy See communicated in a statement.
His Excellency Archbishop Kasujja Augustine prior to his retirement served in various positions in Catholic Church before being appointed Apostolic Nuncio in different countries.
He was first appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Algeria and Tunisia in May 1998 and served in different African countries including Madagascar, Seychelles, and Nigeria. At the time of his retirement, he has been the Apostolic Nuncio in Belgium and Luxembourg.
Apostolic Nuncios serve as the Pope’s envoys or permanent diplomatic representatives to different states or international organizations.
Archbishop Augustine Kasujja was born on April 26, 1946, by Katalina Nanseko and Yozefu Naluswa in Mitala Maria, Mpigi district. He started his education at Ssango and Mitala Maria Primary Schools, before joining Kisubi Minor Seminary in 1960.
In 1966, he joined Katigondo Major Seminary and was sent to Urban University, Rome where he spent eight years studying. He was ordained a priest by Pope Paul VI at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican on January 6, 1973 for the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kampala. This made him one of the very few Ugandan priests to have been ordained by the Holy Father.
In 1974, he returned to Uganda and served as an assistant parish priest at Mubende parish and Katende parish. He later joined the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy that trains Vatican Diplomats.
We wish him well in his retirement after his tour of duty as a Papal Envoy!
