After a year of intensive use, Rui finally got around to reviewing this epic smallsword by J.A. Arnanz and David Pascal. It's always tricky to try and summarise things into a compact video and try to address all points, especially when one is used to letting the fencing do the talking. Still we hope you'll find this video interesting and get to know this awesome swordsmith. We're sure there were plenty of things left unsaid so if you'd feel like you have pending questions, feel free to ask in the comment section below.
A few words taken from Arnanz's page to further explain better the origin and development of this smallsword:
“The Spanish "Doctrina Mixta" was a ramification of the Spanish Destreza that in the midst of a transition period and under a complex dynastic change, was born as a new fencing style in Spain. Is a style of fencing that uses the consolidated Verdadera Destreza as its backbone, and will incorporate part of the technical record of the Italian and French doctrine. A new system was born with it for the use of the Spanish cup hilted sword and the new sword brought by the French nobility and their weapons masters: the smallsword. This will undergo adaptations and changes in relation to the original French sword to adapt to the fencing of Spain at the time. The Spanish Mixed Doctrine will thus be a union between the old and the new, where the guards, the refinement of time, and a more aggressive and athletic gymnastics will come together with the characteristic circular movements, ways of involving the adversary and philosophy of the Spanish School .”-David Pascal.
