I added a Kenwood DDX9903S to my 2015 Honda Accord Sport. I wanted to get CarPlay but also keep the upper display working. To do that required keeping the factory head unit connected. And the only way to do that was to remove the faceplate and bury the factory unit in the dash under the Kenwood.
