Phasor Angles Monitoring (PAM) tool, part of the IRIS product, enhances power system stability by preventing transient instability through real-time monitoring of phasor angles. Developed by EMS Services and Institute Mihajlo Pupin, this tool uses PMUs (Phasor Measurement units) installed at production and consumption centres to continuously measure angle differences across critical points in the network. When the angle difference approaches a predefined critical value, the SCADA system triggers an alarm, prompting operators to re-dispatch active power injections and preserve system stability.
The tool relies on the equal area criterion to determine maximum allowable angles and loads for critical operating regimes, ensuring proactive identification and mitigation of instability risks. PAM is also applicable in scenarios with weak interconnections or high power flows, where oscillations may threaten network stability. Real-time numerical and graphical monitoring, automated alarming, and integration with SCADA allow operators to act quickly and maintain secure system operation.
The IRIS (Resilience Suite for TSOs and DSOs) enhances collaboration between TSOs, DSOs, and RCCs, supporting crisis management and grid resilience in an evolving energy landscape with higher renewable integration and more complex operations.
