Setting text by the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, Piers Connor Kennedy's 'Advent Calendar' was commissioned in 2021 for the inaugural Harrogate Advent Festival for festival directors Toby Ward (Artistic Director - Ensemble Pro Victoria), Anthony Gray (Director of Music - St Wilfrid, Harrogate) and violist Matthew Farrell.
This work is the title track of Ensemble Pro Victoria's 2024 album 'Advent Calendar', a sequence of music and readings jointly curated with Dr Rowan Williams, similar to Eric Milner-White's Nine Lessons and Carols. Hugo Distler's Die Weihnachtsgeschichte (variations on Es ist ein Ros entsprungen) sits alongside a substantial new commission by Piers Connor Kennedy - 'Nowel el el' - a response to Britten's Ceremony of Carols for the men of Pro Victoria and harpist Cecily Beer, alongside established works by Byrd, Praetorius and Stopford.
