This is something I heard Vinnie do on an Alan Pasqua bootleg recording I had. The band was Alan, Vinnie and John Pattitucci. I saw this band perform at a jazz club in 1988.. a mindbending experience and it might be were the bootleg was recorded.
I copied the vamp that Vinnie soloed over in one of the tunes to the best of my ability, and tried to figure out some things.. anything. This is one of them. It may not be 100% accurate, but conceptually it's in the ballpark.
Heads up: You probably won't make a lot of friends doing this on the bandstand, but in a solo situation it can open some doors creatively while providing tension and release in a solo. Learn to hear and play 6/8 over 4/4.
