(11 Sep 2013) PACKHAM INFUSES 'PICNIC' CLOTHES WITH '70s FLAVOR
Jenny Packham infused her spring collection, previewed Tuesday (10 SEPT 2013) at New York Fashion Week, with a little flavor of the 1970s.
There was a casual ease to the clothes without sacrificing glamour.
There were scarf-like halter-neck tops and palazzo pants, and drop-waist dresses and a fully beaded T-shirt dress.
The inspiration actually started with the 1975 movie "Picnic at Hanging Rock," an Australian film set in boarding school at the turn of the 20th century.
"The plot is set in 1900 in Australia, a girl's boarding school, and it's incredibly sort of Edwardian-seventies at the same time," she said.
"The imagery at the beginning is so beautiful, and this group of girls leave the boarding school, go off to have a most fantastic picnic, real sort of dreamy thing. And that's really where we sort of started with the inspiration."
Packham carried the theme through with fancy jeweled embellishment on easy-to-wear blousoned gowns.
Actress Christina Hendricks was in the front row, following the list of looks closely.
"I love Jenny Packham. I think it's so gorgeous. It all sort of has a nice shimmer, and it's so playful," Hendricks said.
And if Packham were to host her own dream glamorous picnic, she has her guest list ready:
"Oh, I would like Marlene Dietrich, she can come. Oh I can think of a wonderful group of people. Obama at the moment. That would be interesting."
