In this video I show you how to make a microphone pop filter for under $10 all with materials from the dollar store. This project is so easy, it will take you less than 10 minutes.
So here's what you're gonna need
A gooseneck phone stand. A badminton racket. Black duct tape. Some trouser socks. Not to be confused with trouser snakes. Basically a leotard. Or nylons... What ever women are calling them these days.
And.... You're gonna need some tin snips and ..... I ended up using scissors. But not a requirement.
Just a quick reminder.... Remember to watch this video all the way til the end to hear the before and after sound test.
So.....
This is the mobile phone stand. It cost me 3 dollars at my local dollar store. As I unbox it youll see it has two ends. One to clamp onto a desk, and the other end clamps to your phone.
Just remove the phone clamp like so. And you're left with a clampless end that will bring us to our next step.
The badminton racket. Just take the tin snips. And cut off the handle. I left a lot of slack in the shaft so that I'd have lots to attach the phone stand to.
Now simply, take the phone stand, and tape it to the badminton racket shaft like so.
While I'm doing that.....
For anyone who would like to know what a pop filter is.
When recording vocals through a microphone - in a recording studio for example.
Because of the proximatey of the human mouth, and the sensitivity of the microphone....
A lot of undesireable pops, and other mouth noises get picked up in the recording.
For example.
Not Just puppies like sniffing Poop
Next to a microphone without a pop filter,
The human mouth makes a lot of undesirable sounds
A pop filter essentially blocks all these sounds so you end up with a much cleaner recording
if you've ever been watching a youtube video with your head phones on and instead of listening to what the guy was saying, you were focusing on the fact it sounds like he's spitting in your ear....
That guy needs a pop filter.
Now. We're ready to apply the trouser sock. Simply stretch it over the badminton racket to get an idea of how much excess you are going to have. Then... Cut off the excess and roll it back on.
Just be careful not to f it up like I just did.
Luckily there was two in the package, so I just used the first one as a template on where to cut the second one before sliding it on.
I then just duct taped the bottom like so .....
And that's it...... You now have a fully functioning pop filter that cost you like 6 bucks. And 10 minutes of your time.
I anticipate some people are going to complain that you can see the string underneath.... And if you're one of those people, then just cut the strings off before you apply the trouser sock.
I personally don't care about the strings... And I'm sure it will just add more stability. This is a dollar store racket after all.
Yes, This pop filter kinda like looks like crap. But, if you're broke, or you just flew to Katy Perry's house with your recording gear but forgot your pop filter.
But this video, a 10 dollar bill and a quick trip to the dollar store has got you covered.
if you're wondering what that big furry box my microphone is sitting in is, it's a very cool mini sound booth that I made. You can check out that video card linked at the top of the screen right now. I strongly recommend it.
Thanks very much for watching.
