A BBC Tribute to the great bass guitarist Herbie Flowers who sadly died on the 5th September 2024.
.. I am not one of the many famous pop stars Herbie worked with, but just a humble member of a choir he set up in 2009 when we lived near Shoreham.
It was great to know this funny, kind, warm, friendly and seriously talented musician..
.. And as a raconteur he could drop 'so' many names....Often making the point that he was paid £12 to be part of the backing band when Abba won Eurovision at the Brighton Dome in 1974.
.. He also could pull many strings and thorough his contacts our little choir performed at some amazing events.
.. With all the tributes in the video - for me he will be most fondly remembered for the Bass Sound on Jeff Wayne's 'War of the World' and Sky's 'Tuba Smarties' and 'Dance of the little Fairies'.
.. with maybe a nod to being the composer of the 1970 No 1 Hit 'Grandad'.
