Staraya Ladoga is an ancient village in the Volkhov district of Leningrad region...dating back to the 9th century. Around the 870s the first wooden fortress was built in Starway Ladoga. In the next century the wooden fortifications were replaced in stone, withstanding siege by the Swedes in the mid 1100s. By the end of the Russian-Sweish War of 1590-1595, Staraya Ladoga was recognised as being part of Russia......
